The Journey-A Beginning

I thought it might interest you to get a glimpse of my personal journey involving the start of ‘Cat’s Gardens’. Let’s begin with details of my original business model, which began around 2007. As you can see, I have been in the ‘grow plants’ business for many seasons.

I’ve retailed at markets such as: Soulard, Kirkwood, Ferguson, University City, Gypsy Caravan, Clayton, Wentzville, Veteran’s Hospital, etc. From experience, I’ve found that “One size does not fit all” and no model is perfect. However, I’ve found it’s more productive when I grow plant material based on customer behavior. Having experienced this real data led to the development of a ‘custom grow model’.

At the beginning, I offered custom grown material for retail or wholesale horticulture operations.

This model of procurement was designed to provide plant inventory with specific selections of plants purchased and offered in smaller quantities. This selection was determined by a collaboration of my grower expertise and retail knowledge of what sold ‘best’ in past seasons.

At seasons end, one is aware of the strong sellers vs. the mediocre varieties that moved slowly! With my ‘custom grow model’ a seller could order small test quantities of diversified selections for evaluation. This may have been cost prohibitive due to quantity purchase requirements, in the past. Any unsold inventory could be returned for credit at seasons end.

The ‘custom grow model’ plant variety I offered for businesses were Proven Winners Perennials and Annuals and other familiar branded varieties. This system assisted in forecasting profit margins more effectively.
